Financial Aid Offer & Disbursement FAQs

Q. How can I resolve my financial aid overpayment?
A. An overpayment occurs when Title IV aid has been disbursed beyond the student’s eligibility and cannot be resolved by adjusting future disbursements of federal aid for that award year. There are different types of overpayments, some are the school’s liability to repay and others are the student’s liability to repay. The type depends on the reason for the overpayment, and who made the error. For overpayments that are the student’s responsibility to resolve, the student will be notified via Broward College email from the Financial Aid Office. The email will direct you to check your myBC (Financial Aid Status). The overpayment will display as a ‘Red Flag’. The ‘Document Details‘ button will provide an explanation of what you are to do in each case.

Once you have reviewed the notification, and if there are no details on making payment arrangements, please contact the Cashier’s Office to make payment arrangements.

Q. How do I change or cancel my action on a financial aid offer (previously declined/reduced/cancelled)?
A.
1. Canceling aid if you have registered for classes:
To cancel your financial aid, if you have registered for courses and aid has not been disbursed, you need to withdraw from all your courses.

If courses have started and 100% refund dates has passed and you are withdrawing, you will need to speak to a Financial Aid representative by scheduling an appointment. Withdrawing from courses may require a financial obligation from you.

2. Cancelling aid if you have not registered for classes:If your financial aid has been assigned to Broward College, you will need to speak to a Financial Aid representative by scheduling an appointment. Withdrawing from courses may require a financial obligation from you.

3. Reducing/Reinstating Award:Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans can be reduced in myBC when the loan(s) is accepted. If you need a reduced amount, you will enter it into myBC and the loan will be adjusted in a nightly job.

For all requests to change an action on your financial aid offer (after accepted and originated – wishing to cancel, reduce, or reinstate your declined loan):

Q. How do I accept/reduce/decline my financial aid offer?
A. Once you log into One Access (myBC), click on the myBC tile in order to view your account information (such as Application Status, Awards, and Authorizations)
If you have resolved all of your RED FLAGS and have been offered a Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized loan, you have the option to either accept, decline, or reduce the amount
You will complete this step by selecting Financial Aid > Application Status from the drop-down menu
If Application Status is selected from the drop-down menu, you can select the academic year you would like to review.
Click on the blue hyperlink that reads SUB LOAN ACCPT/DECLN.
If the blue hyperlink doesn’t respond when clicked, check to see if the pop-up blocker on your browser is preventing it from opening, and turn off the blocker. You may need to try another browser.
Important Note: Students must first accept or decline the subsidized loan before the hyperlink can be activated for them to accept or decline the unsubsidized loan.
If RED FLAGS are not resolved, you will see the required documents and Document Details button. From here you will also see Term Academic and Enrollment Status information.
Once the blue hyperlink is selected, the three options of acceptingdeclining, or reducing the Subsidized/Unsubsidized loan amount are displayed.
From this screen, you will also see additional steps to complete (such as Entrance Interview and Master Promissory Note)
If you choose to reduce the loan amount, you can manually enter the new sum you would like to borrow. Click Change.

Q. When will my financial aid funds disburse?
A.
Disbursement dates and Fund Types disbursed are listed on the News and Alerts page (please allow for 7-10 business days after your disbursement date to receive it). Disbursements do not take place for most funds until Enrollment Verification is completed by the Registrar’s Office on all classes you are enrolled in. Please monitor your myBC for updates. The Pell will be disbursed in correspondence with what has been frozen during enrollment verification.

Example:

  • If Broward has only done enrollment verification for Session 1 (6 credits) then only 6 credits’ worth of Pell grant will be disbursed ($1,587) until we complete enrollment verification for Session 3 (6 credits) then they will get disbursed the additional ($1,586). Therefore, students may not have a refund until they get the additional disbursement until Enrollment verification for Session 3 since tuition and books will be paid from the disbursements that come in.

Note:

  • First-time loan borrowers will have a 30day delay from the start of the term for disbursement.
  • If a loan is originated for one term (single term loan), it is split into 2 equal disbursements. First half during first installment, second half after mid point.

Please be sure to attend the first day of any class to ensure you become eligible for disbursement. If the Registrar’s Office fails to have one day of attendance for your courses or course, then it will impact the disbursement of your financial aid.
