Work Study FAQs

Q. How do I get a work study job?
A.
The Federal Work Study – also known as FWS or Work Study – program is a federal student aid program which provides part-time jobs for eligible students. There are many opportunities for employment through FWS at Broward College, including student services, bookstore, and more! Since positions are limited, students should apply early.

You must follow the steps before applying for a Work Study job via Job Postings. If you are interested in a position, you must contact the Supervisor using the listed email address. The Supervisor is responsible for the selection of candidates and the interview process. If you are hired, the Supervisor will notify you that a resume and application must be submitted to Human Resources. Only the Supervisor can answer any questions about the position posted to the Job Posting site.

Requirements:

  • Complete and submit your FAFSA early to determine eligibility
    • Have an unmet financial need as determined by your FAFSA
    • Indicate your interest in receiving Work Study on your FAFSA
  • Submit FWS application and resumé
  • Students must be on the awarded list to participate in Work Study.
  • For students not on the hiring list, the student or Supervisor may request determination of FWS eligibility by sending an email to faworkstudy@broward.edu.
    • Email response will be sent within 2 business days.

Work Study is limited funding and awarded on a first come, first serve basis restricted to the availability of funds.

Maintaining your Work Study award is subject to the following restrictions:

  • Be admitted to the College as a degree-seeking student and pursuing an eligible major
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits (NOTE: Courses must be required for completion of declared degree)
  • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
  • You must have Need in your Cost of Attendance (Please contact the Financial Aid Office if you have questions regarding Need). If you have no Need, your Work Study can be reduced or removed from your financial aid awards.
  • Once awarded, a student must find a job in 30 days or Work Study will be removed from your financial aid awards. The Financial Aid Office will re-award the funds to the next set of eligible students after the initial 30-day period.
  • Work Study funds are awarded for the Fall and Spring terms. Summer funds are awarded separately.

Managing your Work Study:

  • If you receive Work Study, it will populate in your myBC under Awards.
  • Continuing students who lose their Work Study position may request reinstatement of their award by emailing faworkstudy@broward.edu for consideration.
  • The Financial Aid Office will terminate a student’s employment if the student exceeds their award amount; the supervisor will be notified via email. If the Financial Aid Office notifies the Supervisor of a termination, and the student continues to work, the department is responsible for all wages not covered by Work Study funds.
  • Summer Employment is a manual process; please be sure to check the News and Alerts section of our website for more information.
