FAQs

SAP/R2T4 FAQs

Q. How does withdrawing from all classes affect SAP?
A. This will negatively affect your completion rate (67% Completion Ratio). Students are always encouraged to speak with both an academic advisor and the Office of Financial Aid prior to dropping a course or withdrawing from all their classes to identity how this will impact them both financially and academically.

NOTE: Dropped/dropping does not impact you at all if courses are dropped before the published 100% refund date for the corresponding term.

SAP Policy: www.broward.edu/admissions/financial-aid/maintaining-eligibility

You may also review both policies on our College Catalog here.

Q. I was on SAP probation/termination at my previous school. Will this impact my SAP status at this school?
A. Currently, SAP statuses are not transferred to us. To determine if it will transfer to another institution, please contact them directly.

NOTE: Transfer credits are not included in the Financial Aid GPA calculations unless those courses are applicable to your program of study.

For more information, check out our SAP Policy (College Catalog) and our website (www.broward.edu/admissions/financial-aid/maintaining-eligibility).

Q. What is Broward College’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy?
A. Financial aid must monitor three academic components when determining a student’s academic eligibility for financial aid. Financial aid recipients must:

  • Complete 2/3 of (67%) attempted credit hours (completion rate) during each term
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA – includes:
      • All remedial courses taken at Broward College
      • The most recent grade for repeat courses
      • Courses with a grade of A, B, C, D, or F
  • Complete their program of study within a maximum time frame (150% of program requirements; credit hours or clock hours)

*SAP is measured at the end of each term, within 3 business days after grades have posted.

NOTE: Courses designated as Incomplete (I), Withdrawn (W, WN, XW), Audited (X, XC), Non-Credit (NC) or No Grade Assigned (NG, NR) are not included in the Financial Aid GPA calculation. Transfer credits are not included in the Financial Aid GPA calculation unless the credits are applicable to the program of study.

For more information, check out our SAP Policy (College Catalog) and our website (www.broward.edu/admissions/financial-aid/maintaining-eligibility).

Q. Can I appeal my SAP status?
A. Yes, if you are in a Failed Sap Status, you may request an appeal of your current SAP status. You must complete the electronic Appeal Form and submit all required documents. SAP Appeal forms are located on BC home page (broward.edu) > Admissions & Financial Aid > Paying for College > Financial Aid Forms > Special Circumstances > Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal.

Important Note: SAP appeals will not be reviewed until any red flags on your account have been cleared.

You will receive a Broward College explanation email response (appeal approved or denied) within 14 business days from the date you submitted your appeal and documentation.

NOTE: Filing an appeal does not mean you are eligible to receive federal financial aid, and you must pay any institutional costs up front. If you are approved, you will be limited to aid for only one term at a time until you have reached the consecutive term limit.

  • We will only consider up to 3 appeals during a student’s lifetime of enrollment at Broward College.
  • We will only allow an appeal to be applicable for up to 3 consecutive terms in which a student has enrolled in each term and satisfactorily completed courses within those terms.
  • Students that are failing SAP for “Time to Complete” will only be approved for 1 term (per federal guidelines) if the appeal is approved.

For more information, check out our SAP Policy (College Catalog) and our website (www.broward.edu/admissions/financial-aid/maintaining-eligibility).

Q. Why am I on SAP warning or SAP suspension/termination?
A. Click Here
to know.

R2T4

Q. If I drop classes, will I have to pay back my scholarship?
A.
No. Only Federal Aid is subject to Return of Title IV (R2T4 policy). However, state aid has different implications when a student does not EARN all credits paid on during a term.

Q. Am I required to complete the Title IV Authorization Form?
A.
You will see the Broward Authorization Information Form in myBC as an automatic reaction (pop up) before you can move forward in the student portal.

How do I access this form if the pop-up does not appear?

  • You may access the form online in your BC account. My Financials > Sign-up Change Options > Financial Authorization.

Who processes the application of the financial aid funds to the bookstore for purchasing?
This is an automatic process if you:

  • are enrolled in courses,
  • have enough aid, AND
  • have completed the authorization

The funds will be available at the Bookstore. If the student has completed the BC authorization, it will take 3-4 hours for the Bookstore to receive a new file with any changes or new information.

Who should I contact for immediate assistance?

  • You may contact the Student Accounts team at 954-201-7434.

There are three sections in the Broward Authorization Form:

  • Section 1: Outlines the Financial Obligations and Financial Aid Acknowledgment policies
  • Section 2: Is the Authorization to Pay with Financial Aid. This is where student will make the appropriate selections on how they want your financial aid to be applied to books and balances.
  • Section 3: Is the Electronic Acceptance. Clicking the SUBMIT button is your acknowledgement and the following will display.

Q. If I drop a class, will I have to pay back my financial aid?
A.
Not necessarily. If you maintain the same level of enrollment and credits, your financial aid award should not change. If you make this change before the end of add/drop and can ‘add’ a course with the same amount of credits, your award should not change.

If your overall enrollment status changes, your aid may be adjusted, resulting in owing back funds.

Return of Title IV (R2T4) funds policy
Federal regulations require Title IV financial aid funds to be awarded under the assumption that a student will attend the institution for the entire period in which federal assistance was awarded.

When a student withdraws from all courses for any reason, including medical withdrawals, he/she may no longer be eligible for the full amount of Title IV funds that he/she was originally scheduled to receive.

The return of funds is based upon the premise that students earn their financial aid in proportion to the amount of time in which they are enrolled. A pro-rated schedule is used to determine the amount of federal student aid funds he/she will have earned at the time of the withdrawal.

In the event the withdrawal or failure was COVID related, the student may apply for a COVID waiver. If the waiver is approved, the school will not be required to return funds to the Department of Education. Students requiring R2T4s are emailed information on how to apply for the waiver.
