FAQs

Veterans & Military FAQs

Q. Where do I get information to get started with my VA/Military Benefits?
A.
New students receive an email sent to their BC email, welcoming them to Broward College. It gives them information on how to contact Veterans Services, residency, Veterans waiver, how to request certification, etc. The letter is sent when they apply and indicate they are a Veteran, Active Duty Military, or the dependent of a Veteran.Click here to view a sample email for a Central Campus student (PDF document).

Should you have additional questions, send an email to Veterans Services at veterans@broward.edu.

Q. Is in-state tuition automatically applied for Veterans and Veteran dependents?
A.
No. Students who have not resided in the state of Florida for more than 12 months prior to their class start date can request the Congressman C.W. “Bill” Young Veteran Tuition Waiver. Proof that the student is residing in the state of Florida  (driver license, vehicle registration, voter registration, or lease in the student’s name); dated prior to the start date of the semester and a copy of the DD-214 (Member 4); showing an Honorable discharge are required for the waiver to be applied. For Veteran dependents (spouse or child), they will need to submit their Certificate of Eligibility, proof of residing in Florida and a copy of their sponsoring parent’s DD-214 (Member 4).Students will need to submit an Out-of-State Tuition Waiver for Veterans and Dependents along with supporting documentation. The form can be found at https://www.broward.edu/studentforms/ under the Admissions & Registration tab.

Q. Where can Veteran/Active Military students receive help with completing their academic plan for their benefits package?
A.
BC is proud to assist our Active Military and Veteran students with completing the necessary paperwork to obtain educational benefits.Veterans needing assistance with the academic plans can first speak to their assigned advisor. If the assigned advisor needs assistance, they will reach out to Veteran’s Affairs at Broward College.

The processing of VA Benefits is coordinated by The Office of Veterans Services.

Q. How long does it take to certify my VA benefits?
A.
Once the certification request form has been submitted, it can take up to 10 business days for the request to be processed. During peak times it can take up to 14 business days due to the volume of requests received. It is the responsibility of every student using any VA benefit to submit this form each semester if they wish to be certified.  Any questions or concerns can be sent to Veterans Services at veterans@broward.edu.

Q. When will payments be received for students who receive Chapter 33/33 TOE (Post-9/11) benefits?
A.
The Veteran Services department does a two-step certification process, based on the VA’s recommended procedure. When certification requests are received prior to the start of the term only enrolled credits are submitted to the VA so that Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) payments can be calculated. Once add/drop has passed, Veteran Services begins the process of verifying that enrollments are still valid and then tuition is certified. Only those sessions whose add/drop periods have passed are certified.Once the tuition certifications have been submitted, it can take from 10-15 business days for the funds to be received. During peak times of the year processing times may be longer. This is subject to change based on unforeseen circumstances.

If you are a new student who has never used the benefit, there can be delays in BAH and tuition payments depending on when you separated from the military.

For students who have been approved for the Edith Nourse Rogers STEM scholarship, those payments are processed manually by the VA, therefore processing times may vary. If the Veteran needs more information on when the payment will be disbursed, they can contact the VA Education line at 888-442-4551.

Should you have additional questions, send an email to Veterans Services at veterans@broward.edu.

Q. How do I set up my VA benefits? How do I get military dependent/spouse education benefits?
A.
